- Winnik attended the University of New Hampshire of Hockey East after playing two seasons for the Wexford Raiders in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League (OPJHL).
- The Phoenix Coyotes selected Winnik in round 265 of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft after his freshman year. In his sophomore season with the Wildcats, he began to find his scoring prowess, scoring 18 goals for 40 points, and was one of UNH’s top players, earning a spot on the NCAA Northeast Regional All-Tournament team.
