PlayStation announced on Twitter today that its recent release God of War Ragnarök is the fastest-selling first-party game. At the time of writing, it has sold 5.1 million copies in its first week after launch. It also set a sales record for the God of War franchise.
The game launched on November 9th for both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. One of the most likely reasons why Ragnarok has sold so well is that it is not exclusive to the PlayStation 5. Although sales of that console are rising, it is still still not as widespread as its predecessor, given years of supply chain problems. Sony has not yet provided details on sales per console.
A previous holder of the title was The Last of Us Part II. It sold four million copies in its release weekend and remains the fastest selling PS4 exclusive. Sony’s previous God of War title in 2018 briefly titled itself, selling 3.1 million within its first three days, before being beaten by Spider-Man, who sold 3.3 million.
Ragnarok is also up for several awards at the upcoming Game Awards show, including Game of the Year. The two lead actors, Christopher Judge and Sunny Suljic, are both nominated for Best Performance.
