Professionally, Bill is an American bassist who also owns a record label and produces music. Laswell began his professional bass career in R&B and funk bands in Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan. He listened to shows from the likes of Iggy and the Stooges, MC5 and Funkadelic that fused genres.
Miles Davis, Albert Ayler and John Coltrane were all influences on him. Laswell moved to New York City in the late 1970s and became active in the growing local music scene. He moved into producer Giorgio Gomelsky’s loft and joined a band that would later become the original material.
He has collaborated with artists such as Brian Eno, Fred Frith, John Zorn, Daniel Ponce, Ginger Baker, Peter Brötzmann, Kip Hanrahan and Sonny Sharrock.
Bill and Martin Bisi founded a music studio and met Jean Karakos of Celluloid Records. Laswell’s solo debut album was Baselines. Later, on Herbie Hancock’s album Future Shock, he wrote and produced “Rockit”.
