Who is Jack Kilmer?
Born on June 6, 1995 in Los Angeles, California, USA, John Wallace Kilmer is an actor but probably better known as the son of actor Val Kilmer. His father is known for his work on several popular films in the 1980s and 1990s, including ‘Top Gun’, ‘Batman Forever’ and ‘The Prince of Egypt’. Jack, on the other hand, is known for his work in “Palo Alto” and “Lords of Chaos”.
The wealth of Jack Kilmer
As of mid-2020, Jack Kilmer’s net worth is estimated to be over $1 million, earned through a successful acting career since 2013, and he is likely also benefiting from his father’s success. Val Kilmer’s net worth is estimated at over $25 million, with decades of experience in the business.
Early life, family and education
Jack is Val Kilmer’s son from his marriage to actress Joanne Whalley, who is known for her film work in the 1980s, some of which she worked with Val. Growing up in Los Angeles, Jack became quite familiar with the acting world, mainly thanks to his parents.
He built many connections over the years and was inspired by his father’s success. He was a student at The Center for Early Education, a private school in West Hollywood known for teaching celebrity children.
During his time there, he would become close friends with Gia Coppola, the granddaughter of director Francis Ford Coppola. She was slightly older than him, but they connected thanks to their background in the entertainment industry. The two remained friends and kept in touch even as they moved on with their lives.
Palo Alto – Acting Beginning
In early 2010, Gia approached Jack with a script for ‘Palo Alto”, an intended film adaptation of the book of the same name written by James Franco, which tells the story of teenagers living in Palo Alto, inspired by Franco’s own experiences as a teenager.
Gia intended to direct the film and while he was working on it together, Jack was encouraged to audition for one of the lead roles. He was accepted and cast as Teddy, which also got his father involved as part of the cast – the film starred James Franco, Emma Roberts and Zoe Levin. He was 16 years old at the time and had no plans to pursue a career as an actor, but he had a natural talent and received many positive reviews for his performance, many calling it natural and sincere.
At that time, he had just finished high school and was planning to enroll in college. However, he got the acting bug after the project and decided to pursue it full time.
Two years later, he was cast in the movie “The Stanford Prison Experiment” which is based on real life experiment of the same name performed at Stanford University in the 1970s.
Continuing acting – Lords of Chaos
Jack was next cast in the independent film “Len and Company” in which he teamed up with Juno Temple, Kathryn Hahn and Rhys Ifans. The following year, he worked on ‘The Nice Guys’ and appeared as the character Chet in the film starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, telling the story of two men who teamed up to search for a missing girl in the late 1970s. The film received positive reviews throughout its run.

After a few more projects, he got a lot more attention when he was cast in the movie “Lords of Chaos”, playing Swedish black metal musician Pelle Ohlin, better known by his stage name Dead. The title of the film is based on the book of the same name by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind, which discusses the career of the black metal band Mayhem. The movie received many positive reviews but was controversial to the metal community that not liked the inaccuracy of many of the band’s (alleged) historical events. Jack received almost universal praise for his performance, being able to accurately portray the late musician.
Recent projects
In 2018, Kilmer had a string of films including ‘Josie‘ in which Sophie Turner played the titular character, in the story of a mysterious high school student who moves to a small town and catches the eye of a local recluse. He also worked on ‘Summer ’03’, in which he starred alongside Joey King and Andrea Savage. He then starred in “The Pretenders”, another James Franco movie starring Kilmer alongside Jane Levy and Shameik Moore. The film premiered at the Torino Film Festival.
One of his latest projects is the film “Hello”, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
The titular character is played by Geraldine Viswanathan and tells the story of a woman’s journey of self-discovery; it received positive reviews and many of the performances were praised. Jack also appeared in a music video for Ozzy Osbourne’s “Under the Graveyard”, and is currently working on a movie called “Body Brokers”, starring Jessica Rothe and Frank Grillo. Production on the film started in 2019, although it is unknown how far along the film is as most of the productions have stopped due to the coronavirus.
Private life
Jack is single and a private person, who doesn’t reveal much information besides his acting projects. In his spare time he enjoys sports and is an avid skateboarder. He also goes surfing and plays music just like several of his characters in his films. He is the brother of Mercedes Kilmer, who also pursued an acting career. Because his mother is of British descent, he holds both American and British citizenship.
