Computer sciencea provider of end-to-end enterprise data management solutions, today announced its intention to acquire Privately, a London-based startup helping companies embed privacy protections into their data efforts. Financial terms of the transaction, which is expected to close in the third quarter of 2023, have not been disclosed.

The deal will strengthen the privacy layer of Informatica’s tech stack, specifically the company’s AI-powered Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) platform, enabling companies to democratize the use of data across departments while complying with regulations and data ethics principles .

“Data management and responsible use of data is a growing priority for large companies, but all too often requires a trade-off of flexibility and self-service. With Privitar’s data access management and privacy capabilities integrated into IDMC, customers can deliver best-in-class data governance, access, policy and compliance, enabling better data-driven decision making and business outcomes,” said Amit Walia, CEO, Informatica. in a statement.

What options does Privitar offer?

Founded in 2014 and last valued at $400 million, Privitar is all about helping businesses protect data while enabling its use for use cases such as AI and analytics. The company provides tools to build collaborative workflows and policy-based data privacy and access controls into data operations. For example, it can be used to embed invisible watermarks to track unauthorized distribution of data or to automatically de-identify the information, taking into account who has access to it.

With this deal, all of Privitar’s capabilities come in Informatica’s Intelligent Data Management Cloud to support critical, high-growth use cases around cloud analytics, governance, data mesh, and data marketplace. The platform combines the tooling with its Claire AI engine to automate the application of policy-based privacy and access controls for end customers.

“Joining Informatica allows us to better serve our customers with an integrated data management stack that provides a complete data management solution with security and privacy inherent in the platform. As part of Informatica, we can accelerate our innovation, enhance our capabilities and expand our reach,” said Privitar CEO Jason du Preez.

In particular, this will be another major update for IDMC, following the introduction of Claire GPT to help business users consume, process, manage and analyze data through simple, natural language prompts.

Growing consolidation in the data space

The deal is another example of growing consolidation in the data space. Similar signs were seen when engineering firm dbt Labs agreed to acquire Transform, which wanted to create a semantic data layer to better integrate the modern data stack, and Qlik, owned by Thoma Bravo, announced his intention to join forces with Talend, another entity owned by Thoma Bravo.

“It makes perfect sense that the Snowflakes and the Databricks of the world are very greedy. Whether we see really big acquisitions or if they come in the second half of this year or next year is a matter of question. I would probably bet more on the second half of this year and early next year,” said Sean Knapp, founder and CEO of To take off.iothat automates data and analytics engineering workloads, VentureBeat told me in February.
