It’s Friday night in the US and the music isn’t playing on Spotify. Users report that streams have suddenly stopped, and of people who have logged out, many say they can no longer log in. The outage has generated more than 30,000 reports down detector. com.
The Spotify Status Twitter account has acknowledged the issues, tweet, “we’re looking into it,” but there’s no indication yet as to what may have caused the problem or when services will be restored. A status page for the company’s web API that plugs into other services indicates a “minor” partial outage affecting only the player itself, which is consistent with what we’re seeing – but that’s also the most important part of Spotify.
The last time we saw this kind of service-wide outage for Spotify was a Google Cloud issue, but so far there’s been no evidence of a larger cloud or routing issue that could affect other services as well.
At this point, you may need to pass the aux cord to someone who doesn’t have a Spotify subscription (they’ll be easy to identify, they’re the only one who didn’t post a Spotify Wrapped image on social media a few weeks ago), or do something as archaic as relying on downloaded mp3s or some kind of physical media.
