You may recall last year when ReedPop announced that E3 2023 would be a live, in-person event – a throwback to the olden days – I had the absolute audacity to describe the event as “far from dead.” Well, this week will teach me to speak up because it turns out I was dead wrong. E3 is dead. Now set up the tombstone. She is dead, gone and buried. We even know who the killer is: that old goblin, indifference.
To be fair, I can see where the predictions of imminent death came from regarding E3. I just hoped it could last another year for selfish reasons. Despite being in the games (and games-related) industry for 10 years now, I have never personally attended E3. For numerous reasons, I never really got to experience the event when it was at its peak. I hoped (not expected, mind, to hope) the event was going to go on this year, so at least I could say I went, even if it was a shadow of what it once was.
Until Thursday I would be writing this column about the gameplay trailer for Tears of the Kingdom. Overall, it looks great and I can’t wait to play it. In time, I’m curious to see how players adapt to the fusion mechanic and how much of the game’s story has to do with it. So far it feels like Nintendo is holding the reins of TotK incredibly tightly, and even this small glimpse doesn’t give us the full picture of what’s in store in a few weeks.
In personal news, I’m taking this week to catch up on releases I haven’t finished yet. Now that I’ve completed my second playthrough of Resident Evil 4 Remake, I finally have to move on (for now). So I will hopefully finish Bayonetta Origins, Dead Space and Metroid Prime Remastered. I have to finish this one or the other releases coming soon will bury them. I’d try Crime Boss: Rockay City, but I’m a bit wary of any game that wants to tell me more about the cast than the gameplay.
