Miami Mayor Francis Suarez thinks Twitter should move from its current home in San Francisco. His argument? The changes new owner Elon Musk has made align with Miami’s embrace of the American dream.
Business Insider recently interviewed Suarez, who said he believes Twitter belongs in his city. “I think their rebranding fits with” Miami, Suarez said, “a city that values freedom and freedom of expression.”
Mayor Suarez told Business Insider that he’s been trying to contact Musk through various channels, but that he “hasn’t heard back yet. It’s obviously a hyper-complex situation with everything that’s going on.”
Business Insider had more details about the “hyper-complex” situation:
Suarez suggested moving the company’s headquarters out of San Francisco afterward reported Forbes that city building inspectors have launched an investigation into messages posted on Twitter converted several office spaces at the headquarters were turned into bedrooms so that employees could work and sleep there for long hours.
The move would not be without precedent. Financial services firm Citadel recently moved its headquarters from Chicago to Miami. Mayor Suarez sees these business moves as a way to bolster Miami’s profile as a tech hub.
It’s unclear at this point if Elon Musk is considering a move to Twitter headquarters, but he’s undoubtedly made his mark on the company since taking over for $44 billion in October. The tech billionaire has cut about half of Twitter’s workforce, introduced new features, removed others, and sparked quite a bit of controversy as a result.
Mayor Suarez has made high-profile efforts to lure tech companies and talent to South Florida before, with measures such as changing city laws to make it easier for startups to raise money and tweeting to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos earlier in December , asking him to move Amazon’s second headquarters from Northern Virginia to Miami.
