What job offers you the chance to implement innovative ideas, a good work-life balance and an annual salary of $120,000?
If you guess the software developer, you will not have any errors.
US news and world report recently released its yearbook 2023 best jobs rankings, which list the top 100 jobs in 17 categories, including company, healthcareand technology.
Software developers have the “best job” because of the growth potential, less stressful nature, and salary of the position.
The choice was somewhat surprising given the massive layoffs in the technology sector over the past year, but Janica Ingram, the careers editor at American newsnoted that the position is in high demand across all industries, not just technology.
“Software developers are becoming increasingly important to the growth and sustainable success of businesses,” she said. “The 10-year occupancy outlook is strong and is expected to grow at above average rates. It is forecast to be in high demand due to the rising number of products and services that use software. Low unemployment and a high median salary also contribute adds to the appeal of this career.”
Even if software developers lose their jobs, they can get back on their feet pretty quickly. A study of Revelio Labs found that 72% of laid-off tech workers found a new job within 90 days.
There should be a lot of demand for software developers over the next decade. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment growth of 26.0% for software developers between 2021 and 2031.

Other top features
After software developer, nurse practitioner ranked number 2 in the ranking, medical and health services manager was number 3 and physician assistant number 4.
Healthcare jobs captured 13 of the top 20 jobs on that list. Why?
Ingram credits the “higher-than-average salaries, low unemployment rates, and strong prospects for the future”.
These are the top 10 vacancies:
- Software developer
- Nurse
- Medical and health services manager
- Doctor’s assistant
- Information security analyst
- Physiotherapist
- Financial director
- IT manager
- Web developer
- Dentist
Pilots made the list for the first time, number 47.
I think it is better to fly planes than to travel in them.
How the ranking is determined
To find the top 100 jobs, American news looks at data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics based on several factors, such as average salary, stress level, unemployment rate, and projected job openings for the next ten years. They also interview employees in different professions.
