Why are Vogue and Conde Nast suing Drake and 21 Savage?

Imitation can be considered the most sincere form of flattery, but when it comes to tampering with Fashionit’s definitely not in style.


Rappers Drake and 21 Savage are in hot water with the iconic publication after being hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit on behalf of Vogue’s parent company, Condé Nast, for using the magazine’s logo and likeness in promotional materials for their new collaborative album, hair loss.

In a complaint obtained by CBS news, Condé Nast claims the promos are “completely built” on Vogue probability, specifically using a fake Vogue cover featuring Vogue’s exact logo and layout, which has since been removed from social media.

“Defendants’ lighthearted disregard for Condé Nast’s rights has left it with no choice but to initiate this action and seek the immediate injunction requested herein, along with all available funds to discourage the kind of blatant infringements and false advertisements in which defendants have become engaged,” the documents read.

The rappers are being sued for more than $4 million.

Drake also thanked FashionThe editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, made the debut of the fake cover in his caption, but the outlet and Wintour have maintained that they knew nothing about the campaign and did not endorse it.

“This is all wrong. And none of that has been approved by Condé Nast,” Condé said, per e! News.Fashion magazine and its editor-in-chief Anna Wintour have not been involved in hair loss or its promotion, and have not endorsed it in any way.”

The lawsuit also alleges that the two rappers went so far as to distribute fake physical copies of “Vogue” magazines with their faces on the cover in major US cities, including New York and Los Angeles.

Condé requests the two rappers to stop using the promotional material immediately.

Neither Drake nor 21 Savage has publicly commented on the lawsuit.
