Robert and his three siblings were raised in Virginia by their mother Anne-Dillon D. Costa, who is a lawyer, and their father Thomas E. Costa, who is also a lawyer and who also represented Bristol-Myers Squibb pharmaceutical company .
Robert spent his first two years in Richmond, then the family moved to Lower Makefield Township in Bucks County, Pennsylvania where he attended grade school and became interested in playing football but dreamed of becoming a famous actor.
