The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian American television series set during the Second American Civil War. The Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian regime, has overthrown the US government and enslaved its prolific women, known as Handmaids, to prolific slavery. The series, like its predecessors, explores the problems of oppressed women in patriarchal environments and their quest for freedom from slavery. Gladys Wheeler, a wealthy Canadian who adores Serena and is a major factor behind Gilead’s growth in Toronto, is played by Angelson. Who is Genevieve Angelson or Gladys Wheeler from Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale?
Genevieve Rose Angelson is a well-known American actress who has appeared in such episodes as The Afterparty, Good Girls Revolt and Flack. Angelson was born in New York City to businessman and attorney Mark Angelson and his wife Lynn. Caitlin Hobart joined the cast of the Showtime series House of Lies in 2013. Angelson took over as Det. Nicole Gravely in Backstrom in 2014, replacing Mammie Gummer. She appeared in the original Amazon series Good Girls Revolt in 2016, which was canceled after one season.
Angelson also appeared on the DC Comics program Titans. Her other major works include two episodes of the television series This Is Us. Aside from television and movies, Angelson has been in Broadway shows such as the Tony Award-winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. In the upcoming season of the award-winning series, Angelson will play the pro-Serena Mrs. Playing Gladys Wheeler.
Despite her character’s affinity with the series’ opponent, Angelson told TV Line that Gladys Wheeler isn’t a “bad guy.”
She continued and said:
“I couldn’t say, ‘I’m playing a terrible man,’ because I played Mrs. Wheeler. ‘I’m portraying someone who is willing to do anything to save humanity, and that’s what we’re running into,’ I had to explain. So, do I really want to be the person I am? Maybe not. But I accept it as my reality, and that’s what I do. That’s how I got away with it.”

Bruce Miller developed The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s book of the same name. The first season debuted on Hulu in 2017 and has already won eight Emmys, including one for Outstanding Drama Series and a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama.
Cast members include Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd and Samira Wiley. Moss won a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe for her portrayal as June, aka Offred, in the series. Season 5 of the show will air on Hulu on Wednesday, September 14, featuring the first two episodes. The other episodes appear once a week.
