His father, Bill Comrie was a former co-owner with his brothers of the furniture company the brick, who gave Mike a comfortable upbringing. His mother Theresa died of cancer in 1990 when Mike was only 10 years old.
He has an older sister Cathy and older brother Paul, born to Bill and Theresa. His brother Paul had also played ice hockey and is a recognized striker in the National Hockey League (NHL).
His father remarried and had two more children with his second wife, Eric and Ty, who are also two talented hockey players – Eric is a goalkeeper and Ty plays in the middle position, as Mike did during his career.
