Fickell began his education at DeSales High School. In 1992, he was a standout member of the Ohio State Buckeyes’ defensive unit. From 1993 to 1996, he started 50 consecutive games at nose guard, a school record.
Later, after graduating from Ohio State in 1997, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. He then joined Ohio State’s NFL coaching staff in 1990 as a graduate assistant.
Later, in 2000, he was hired as a defensive coach at the University of Akron. After two years, he returned to Ohio State as team coordinator. In 2005, he was promoted to Co-defensive Coordinator.
Later, in 2010, he was named AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year. Likewise, on December 10, 2016, he was named the 39th head coach at the University of Cincinnati.
