Neil is an English judoka who has represented Great Britain at several Olympic Games and World Championships. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1983 New Year Honors for services to judo. He also won a gold medal at the 1981 World Judo Championships in Maastricht, Netherlands. Likewise, silver medals in the 1980 and 1984 Summer Olympics, as well as the 1983 World Judo Championships, resulted in five European trophies.
He is also a two-time British Judo Championship Champion, winning the Lightweight and Half-Middleweight Championships in 1976 and 1988 respectively. On December 18, 2018, at the age of 60, he was named kudan-9th Dan by the International Judo Federation.
