Rick Harrison is an American television personality, producer and entrepreneur born on March 22, 1965 in Lexington, North Carolina, USA. He is known for appearing on the History Channel show “Pawn Stars”.

Early life

Richard Kevin was born the third child of Richard Benjamin and Joanne Rhue Harrison. Rick’s older sister Sherry was born with Down syndrome and suffered serious health complications that caused her accidental death at the age of six. Rick’s brothers are Joseph and Chris.

Rick’s father served in the Navy for 20 years, and his mother – a future realtor – was the daughter of one of the city’s most prominent lawyers. Rick’s family moved to California when he was two years old and his father was transferred there.

In his youth, Rick became an avid book reader. His favorite work was “The Great Brain” by John D. Fitzgerald, but he also became a fan of history books and his favorite subject was the British naval power Royal Navy.

He attended Taft Middle School, although he never finished his studies as he dropped out of school at the age of 14. In 1981, when Rick was barely 16 years old, his parents’ real estate business collapsed when they lost more than $1 million due to high interest rates. This caused his family to move to Las Vegas, Nevada in search of new opportunities.

Career

First steps

After dropping out of school at age 14, Rick Harrison entered the workforce. He had many jobs such as repossessing cars and selling faux haute couture items.

Now based in Las Vegas, his father opened his first thrift store called the Gold & Silver Coin Shop in 1981, giving Rick the opportunity to work with him during the day while he had other jobs at night.

The store grew exponentially, prompting the company to move to a different, larger location on Fremont Street, though the experience was short-lived and the store had to be relocated to a spot on Las Vegas Boulevard due to various issues with their lease.

In 1988, both Rick and his father thought about converting their shop into a pawnshop. At the time, Las Vegas had a population of 200,000, and Nevada law required such things to be restricted until the city’s population grew: ‘The good-ol’ boys, in the ’50s, thought we had our pawn shops, we don’t want competition, so they passed a law that said they would issue another pawn permit when there are 250,000 people in the city of Las Vegas.

This was when there were only 20,000 people in Las Vegas and no one ever thought it would reach 250,000. But look, in 1988 I was the first to get a driver’s license.’

However, getting that license was not an easy task; Harrisons wrestled legally for a while until they succeeded. The second-hand shop no longer existed when the Gold & Silver Pawnshop took its place.

By the late 1990s, the company had achieved tremendous success with an inventory of over 5,000 items, and by 2005 was grossing approximately $3 million annually. The items the store was best known for were rare sporting goods and collectible jewelry.

Rick Harrison’s passion for history also helped him improve the company brings him great pride: ‘We certainly have a different type of store. Three generations work here. It’s really eclectic. Think about it: one week we’re American Chopper, the next week Antiques Roadshow, the next week Pimp My Ride. We’re a little bit of everything.’

TV program

The Gold & Silver Pawn Shop first appeared on TV in 2003 when it appeared in “Insomniac with Dave Attell”. That’s why Rick Harrison thought it would be a good idea to make a TV show about the store’s activities. His attempts to make this dream come true were unsuccessful for a few years, until 2008, when producers from Leftfield Pictures found the store with the same idea.

The original idea was to bring the show to HBO, although the concept of the series was very different from what Rick and his father had envisioned. It wasn’t until History Channel producer Nancy Dubuc changed the show’s format to a more real, peaceful setting with customers appreciating the items on display or selling their own items to the store that the show finally made sense.

“Pawn Stars” premiered in 2009 and in 2011 it was one of the network’s highest rated series. To date, the show has been on the air for over 11 years and is its 17th^e season.

The show has turned the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop into a nationwide attraction, drawing tourists, TV fans and history buffs to the shop. For this reason Rick, his father, son Corey and best friend “Chumlee” cannot be found in the store during the off-show season.

Rick Harrison has made several more television appearances, such as on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Late Show with David Letterman”.

Rick has also landed minor acting roles such as in TV series “iCarly” and “The Middle”, along with movies “I Lost My Head in Vegas” and “The Safe”. He also made a small appearance in Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” short video.

Advocacy

In 2018, Rick partnered with Epilepsy Foundation to raise awareness for the disease, which personally affected Harrison in his childhood, as he stated in in an interview: ‘Because of my seizures, I had to spend a lot of time in bed in my room as a child, away from the television.

The best way to entertain myself was to read, so I became very interested in history books’.

In addition, Rick expressed his happiness that the nonprofit reached out to them: “I am honored to be working with them and want to encourage everyone to talk about their stories and build a community to help in any way I can as we get further. in finding more solutions for people with epilepsy’.

Private life

At the age of 17, Rick and his girlfriend Kim were expecting their first child together. Unfortunately, pregnancy complications caused Kim to miscarry.

Despite this and their young age, Rick and Kim decided to get married and welcomed two sons together named Corey and Adam. After the birth of their second son, the couple divorced and Rick was in charge of raising both children.

Not long after the divorce, Rick met a woman named Tracy Ann Hill, whom he married in 1987. The marriage lasted more than two decades until they filed for divorce in 2011.

The following year, Harrison proposed to his girlfriend Deanna Burditt, whom he eventually married in July 2013 in California.
