Professional career
Shaun Rooney started his football career with the Bellshill Boys Club junior team. He joined Dundee United’s junior team in 2010 and remained there until 2013. On 1 July 2013, he joined Scottish League Two club Queen’s Park and on 27 July 2013, he made his club debut in a 1–2 home defeat against Ayr United . in Hampden Park.
In his first season, he took part in all 11 matches. In addition, on November 15, 2014, he scored his first goal for Queen’s Park with a header in a 4-1 away win over Elgin City. In the 2014–15 season, he appeared in 22 matches for the side, recording one assist and two goals.
Dunfermline Athletic
Due to his exceptional efforts for the team, he was named the club’s Young Player of the Year that season, as well as being named in the PFA Scotland Scottish League Two Team of the Year. He made his Dunfermline debut on trial in August 2015 and was a named substitute against Peterhead and Stranraer, replacing Lewis Martin in a 3–1 win over Stranraer.
On 12 September 2015, he made his club debut, coming on as a substitute for Callum Fordyce in a 2–0 loss against Ayr United. On 19 December 2015, he scored his first goal for the side in a 1-0 win at East End Park. In the 2015–16 season, he made 14 appearances for the team, recording 1 assist and 1 goal in all competitions as Ayr United won Scottish League One.

On May 23, 2016, he signed a two-year contract with newly promoted National League team York City. He made his club debut on 6 August 2016 in a 1-1 draw against Maidstone United.
On 7 January 2017, he scored his first goal for the team in a 2-2 draw with Dover Athletic. On 1 June 2018, he joined Scottish Championship club Inverness Caledonian Thistleand on 14 July 2018, he made his professional debut in a 2–0 home win over Cove Rangers in the Scottish League Cup.
On 1 September 2018, he scored his first goal for the side in a 3-0 win against Dunfermline. During his rookie season, he made 46 appearances for the side, providing 1 assist and 6 goals in all competitions. During the 2019-2020 season, he appeared in 31 games, recording three goals and five assists.
Sint Janssteen
After signing a provisional contract earlier in the year, he signed a two-year contract with St Johnstone in June 2020.. In addition, he made his club debut on 12 August 2020, in a 3-0 loss against Rangers. On 28 February 2021, he scored the winning goal as St Johnstone beat Livingston 1–0 in the 2021 Scottish League Final.
Later, on 22 May 2021, at Hampden Park, he scored the winning goal in the Scottish Cup Final against Hibernian. During the 2020–21 season, he appeared in 39 appearances for the club, scoring six goals and assisting three more in all competitions, assisting St Johnstone to win the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.
