Linda Lavin was born in Portland, Maine, on October 15, 1937, to David Joseph Lavin and Lucille (née Potter). Her father was an entrepreneur and her mother was a professional opera singer. Her grandparents were Russian Jews who immigrated to the United States.
Lavin started performing on stage when he was five years old. She attended Waynflete School and later the College of William and Mary. Lavin performed in several Broadway shows while in college.

Linda Lavin began her acting career as Gloria Thorpe in a television adaptation of the musical Damn Yankees with Phil Silvers in 1967. Later in her career, she had recurring roles on TV sitcoms such as The Nurses, Rhoda, Harry O and Kaz, among others.
Lavin rose to fame after starring in the CBS network’s Alice. She appeared in all nine seasons of the show and was nominated for two Golden Globes and a Primetime Emmy.
