Trauma may sound like an odd starting place for comedy, but then Lenny Bruce once said, “All my humor is based on destruction and despair.” The ladies behind the podcast about sex, dating and relationships Girls need to eat are no strangers to this truth. When Ashley Hesseltine found herself in a relationship she really wanted to work for, but kept encountering roadblocks, she delved deep into the psychology of relationships. That knowledge became the basis for Girls have to eat which she started in 2018 with Rayna Greenberg, who had experienced her own romantic trauma, including a broken engagement. Now the podcast gets 2.5 million monthly downloads, is a top 20 podcast on iTunes and Spotify, and after 50 live shows last year, Girls need to eat is going on tour in Australia.
It’s easy to write entertainment successes off as stories of pure talent, but Hesseltine doesn’t regret that: “We’ve treated the podcast like a business from day one,” she says. Being an ukbusinessupdates.com has always been a goal for her, as “I’ve had “issues with authority” all my life. That’s part of it. “I’m in control of my own life and all the success and failure is mine.”
