Victura’s documentary related to the video game Six Days in Fallujah will be featured in an exhibition for video games depicting war at the Imperial War Museum in London.
Victura has one of the most controversial gaming projects in the works with Six days in Fallujaha first-person shooter that captures the Second Battle of Fallujah during the Iraq War in 2004. The game was canceled once, then it was revived by Victura, and it continued to be criticized as wartime propaganda.
The Imperial War Museum has collected some video games for an exhibition called War Games: Real Conflict | Virtual worlds | Extreme entertainment. It has a wide variety of titles, from the civilian-oriented This War of Mine to the realistic shooter Sniper Elite 5. The exhibit opens today and runs through May 28, 2023. The exhibit seeks to challenge the perception of how video games tell stories. on interpreting war and conflict. I spent a day in this museum and it was very well done.
Victura delivers its exclusive game footage and interviews in a documentary created by the team building Six Days in Fallujah. Game developers of Middle Eastern descent and others have said the subject is too raw and the game shouldn’t exist.
Conceived by a United States Marine who was badly wounded in combat, Six Days in Fallujah recreates true stories from the Second Battle of Fallujah in 2004, which became one of the world’s toughest and most impactful modern battles.
In the game, players take on the roles of real marines, army soldiers and Iraqi civilians as they take part in critical moments during the battle.
More than 100 Marines, soldiers and Iraqi civilians who attended the Second Battle of Fallujah shared their personal stories, photos and video footage with the development team. The game gives voice to these stories through gameplay and first-person accounts captured in original documentary interview footage.
“Six Days in Fallujah allows players to become virtual participants in a world-changing historical event, providing context and insight that were not possible until now,” said Victura CEO Peter Tamte in a statement. “It’s inspiring to see one of the world’s most respected authorities on conflict demonstrate the important ways games like Six Days in Fallujah can use interactivity to help players understand the events that shape our world.”
Chris Cooper and Ian Kikuchi, co-curators of Imperial War Museums’ War Games exhibit, said in a statement: “Paintings, books, plays, films and TV shows have all told poignant stories of conflict. Video games have continued this tradition in the twentieth and 21st century has become the largest and fastest growing entertainment industry today, and we hope this exhibition will prompt visitors to reflect on the impact these media can have on our perception and understanding of war and conflict.”
Six Days in Fallujah is being developed for PC and consoles. It is being made by Highwire Games and has no launch date yet. The five branches of the Imperial War Museum attract more than 2.5 million visitors every year.
