Everyrealm’s hometopia is one of the first mainstream metaverse games focused on home design, building and renovation of virtual real estate. The free-to-play Web3 game aims to tap into the addictive nature of home design games like The Sims, Animal Crossing or Roblox.
In fact, Roblox players may find Hometopia’s mechanics familiar. Hometopia’s in-game experience is similar to Roblox experiences like Bloxberg or Brookhaven. In true Web3 fashion, unlike Roblox, Hometopia homeowners actually own what they create or acquire.
“Hometopia will capture those looking for a more realistic home design and world creation game as they grow older from the home building games they loved as kids,” Hometopia boss Alex Ahlund said in a statement. GamesBeat. “Hometopia is on the cusp of becoming this generation’s The Sims, one of the best-selling PC games of all time, selling over 11 million copies and generating over $5 billion in revenue.”
The reality is that reality isn’t always fun
You know what one of the biggest problems with the metaverse is? No one is quite sure what the point is. It’s hard, but true. Oh, there are definitely ideas floating around. Meta Boss Mark Zuckerberg Is Desperately Looking For force his own employees there for example.
But if you don’t work for the company formerly known as Facebook, what’s the problem? I think, if we may be vague about it, it’s about experience. Metaverses should be about doing things that are improbable or impossible in reality.
For example, it is unlikely that I will ever own a house. With prices skyrocketing and wages not tracking precisely, that goal is getting further and further away every year. Beyond owning a house, house design is definitely not in the cards. For real, real houses, it’s better to leave that to the professionals.
But in a video game? I can build the perfect dream home. I can decorate things however I want. In Hometopia I can do that without listening to NPCs babbling in gibberish. I can do that without developing a crippling turnip addiction. More importantly, I can do that without having to play a multiplayer game for kids.
