Mortal Kombat is celebrating its 30th anniversary after visiting arcades for the first time in October 1992. The gory style of the fighting game made it an instant classic. The style has influenced titles across the industry for the past 30 years.
Mortal Kombat was one of the first video game series to expand into a multimedia franchise featuring movies, comic books, and animated adaptations of the series. A new trailer released by NetherRealm to commemorate the history of the series highlights this. They show different adaptations of iconic characters such as Liu Kang and Sonya Blade side by side to highlight how they have changed over time.
Unfortunately, this trailer doesn’t announce any new content, but NetherRealm has unleashed a bit of nostalgia for fans. Klassic Movie Raiden will be available to Mortal Kombat Mobile players from October 7-11. The skin features the likeness and voice of actor Christopher Lambert from the 1995 film.
NetherRealm Studios co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Ed Boon confirmed on Twitter that NetherRealm Studios’ next title would not be announced until after the anniversary celebrations.
As NetherRealm celebrates the anniversary of Mortal Kombat, it comes at a time of change. It remains unclear how Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will be affected by the merger between Warner Bros. Media and Discovery and what the new entity’s long-term gaming strategy is. In Aprilannounced Warner Bros. Discovery announced that JB Perrette would become CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery Global Streaming and Interactive Entertainment, which, among other things, oversees the company’s gaming strategy.
