Netflix is going to play football. On Wednesday, the streaming giant announced a new sports docuseries, Quarterback, which will focus on three NFL quarterbacks: Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs (who just picked up his second Super Bowl win and second Super Bowl MVP award); Kirk Neven of the Minnesota Vikings; and Marcus Mariota of the Atlanta Falcons. The series will premiere this summer.
“For the first time ever, the NFL allowed quarterbacks to be taped for every game in a season,” Netflix wrote. in a post about the series. “The upcoming show will provide behind-the-scenes access to some of the season’s biggest moments as Mahomes set an NFL record for total offense en route to winning the League and Super Bowl MVP awards; Cousins staged the biggest comeback in NFL history and led the Minnesota Vikings to an NFC North Division title; and Mariota took over as starting quarterback in his first season with the Atlanta Falcons.
Netflix says that’s the approach for “this year,” indicating the show could take a different format in subsequent seasons, should they happen; Netflix has only ordered one season so far, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Quarterback contributes to a growing range of sports content on Netflix. The fifth season of the hit Formula 1: drive to survive premiered on Friday and Netflix has already launched a tennis-focused series, Breakpointand a wave-focused series, Full swing, this year. Netflix is also working on shows about the Tour de France 2022 and the 2022 World Cup.
