Vendor of Enterprise software platform Mendix recently released the results of its annual Low-Code Survey showing a shift in the use of low-code applications. Specifically, 69% of the 556 business and technology leaders surveyed in the US, UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands said their use of low-code has evolved from a crisis management technology during the pandemic to a core technology today.
In fact, one in nine respondents said that if they had not used technology, including low-code, to adapt to the rapidly changing circumstances in 2020 and 2021, their organization would have gone out of business. Ten percent said low-code has become the foundation of their business.
Low-code reaches new heights
The type of apps built with low-code is also shifting. About 40% of respondents said they now use low-code to build business-critical solutions, especially business software, productivity apps, and customer portals.
The surveyed organizations plan to use low-code more than traditional coding by 2024. A contributing factor is that most companies (87%) plan to further accelerate software development over the next two years.
More fundamentally, low-code has been embraced as a digital transformation tool as it simplifies the digitization of internal and customer-facing processes.
For example, 63% of manufacturers have already used low-code or no-code to reduce transport, logistics and supply chain issues. Banks, financial institutions and insurance companies have used these methods to automate quotes and create simpler digital buying processes.
Public sector organizations are following other sectors in low-code adoption. Only 22% have implemented low-code, while another 57% have started or are halfway through a deployment. More than half have seen low-code identity authentication improve. Meanwhile, retail is using low-code to enable hybrid trade and pick-up.
The biggest barriers to low-code adoption are security and organizational complexity.
