Happy new year! This first week of 2023 has already been a whirlwind of AI and excitement from CES 2023, the annual Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

Senior writer/editor Sharon Goldman has covered AI news, DALL-E and ChatGPT, among others. Will 2023 be the year of generative AI? That’s how it starts for sure. In our top story of the week, Goldman talks to DALL-E inventor and co-inventor of DALL-E 2, Aditya Ramesh, about how far the technology has come in its first two years and how much further it can go.

Our second and third top stories both star in ChatGPT. In position 2, Ben Dickson analyzes Microsoft’s decision this week to include ChatGPT in its Bing search engine, reportedly as early as March. Will it help Bing overtake Google as the top search engine? Maybe… But maybe it will topple Google in other ways.

At position 3, papers written by ChatGPT have been banned from a top AI conference. And then the audience went wild! Teachers and professors have already expressed concern about receiving papers written by AI rather than students; now the subject has moved beyond academia. Since it directly affects those who create and revise the actual AI technology, you can expect the issue to be addressed in 3, 2, 1…

Our fourth and fifth top stories of the week are about new technologies unveiled at this week’s CES show. Everyone can use lighter AR glasses, but a self-propelled stroller? That will be harder to sell.

Here are the top five stories for the week of January 2.

Before DALL-E 2, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney there was only a research paper called “Zero-Shot text-to-image generation.”

With that paper and a verified website demo, on January 5, 2021 — two years ago today — OpenAI introduced DALL-E, a neural network that “creates images of text captions for a wide variety of concepts that can be expressed in natural language.” (Also today: OpenAI reportedly in talks for atakeover bid that would value it at $29 billion. “)

Since the release of ChatGPT in November, there has been a lot of speculation about OpenAI’s latest LLM (Large Language Model) spelling for Google Search. Sentiment has only grown stronger with Microsoft’s recent report preparing to integrate ChatGPT into its Bing search engine.

There are several reasons to believe that a ChatGPT powered Bing (or any other search engine) will not seriously to threaten Search Google’s near-monopoly. LLMs have several critical issues that need to be resolved before they can make a dent in the online search industry. Meanwhile, Google’s share of the search market, its technical prowess, and its financial resources will ensure it remains competitive (and possibly dominant) as conversational LLMs begin to make their mark on online search.

Meanwhile, the real (and less discussed) potential of LLMs like ChatGPT is the “unbundling” of online search, where real opportunities lie for Microsoft and other companies. By integrating ChatGPT into successful products, companies can reduce the use of Google Search.

A machine learning conference on using machine learning? While that may seem So meta, in his call for paper submissions Indeed, on Monday, the International Conference on Machine Learning noted that “papers containing text generated from a large-scale language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT are prohibited unless the produced text is presented as part of the experimental analysis of the paper .”

It wasn’t long before a lively debate erupted on social media in what is arguably a perfect example of what businesses, organizations and institutions of all shapes and sizes, across industries, will have to grapple with in the future: how will people dealing with the emergence of large language models that can help communicate – or borrow, extend or plagiarize, depending on your point of view – ideas?

Israeli Lumus, the developer of reflective waveguide technology for augmented reality (AR) glasses, has introduced its second-generation technology to enable the development of smaller and lighter AR glasses.

The Lumus Z Lens 2D waveguide architecture builds on 2D Maximus to enable the development of smaller, lighter AR glasses with high-resolution image quality, outdoor-compatible brightness, and seamless prescription eye integration. The AR modules can be as much as 50% smaller.

The new technology will be publicly demonstrated for the first time at CES 2023, the major tech trade show in Las Vegas this week. Lumus hopes the technology will be the AR bridge to the exciting possibilities of the metaverse.

Glüxkind Technologies showed off its AI-based smart stroller Ella at the CES 2023 tech show in Las Vegas.

Vancouver, Canada-based Glüxkind Technologies created Ella to support new parents in their daily adventures, to be more inclusive and to enable families to spend quality time together. It’s yet another example of technology – and AI in particular – infiltrating everyday products that don’t normally contain much technology. I must say I never expected to see a stroller with AI.

Ella, Glüxkind’s AI stroller is designed and optimized for everyday life, not for the showroom. With Ella’s adaptive push and brake assist, both parents and carers can enjoy effortless walks no matter the terrain; uphill, downhill and even when loaded with groceries and toys. All that stuff will be a walk in the park, the company said.
