When I tried to log in to TweetDeck today, I encountered a little surprise: it didn’t work.
When I started typing the word “tweetdeck” into my URL bar, my browser suggested the rest of the URL, tweet deck. com, as I am used to. But after hitting the Enter key, my browser unexpectedly took a few seconds to try to load TweetDeck and then showed me this error on a mostly blank page:
upstream connection failure or disconnect/reset before headers. reset reason: connection error
I encountered the same error in two different Chrome profiles and then started to panic. Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, I don’t tweet as much anymore, but I still rely on my many TweetDeck columns and alerts as important news-gathering tools for my work.
However, to my relief, a colleague told me that TweetDeck worked for them, and we found out why.
It turns out navigating to tweetdeck.com consistently throws the error I saw but entered tweetdeck.twitter.com loads TweetDeck fine. This seems to indicate that the shorter URL issue is some sort of redirect issue on Twitter’s side.
We weren’t the only ones observing the problem. Freelance writer Bob Bardsley tweeted the same solution on January 5and many people have thanked him in the replies.
As far as I know, Twitter has not officially addressed the issue yet. It doesn’t have it listed on it TweetDeck Twitter account (who, at the time of writing, hasn’t tweeted since August) or the Twitter Support account (who last tweeted on December 22, 2022). The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment, although it has dissolved its press agency.
Despite the many layoffs, including more this week, Twitter generally operated normally, although there were a few bouts of glitches. And aside from this weird redirect issue, TweetDeck continued to work well for me. Fingers crossed that someone on Twitter can fix what’s going on, but in the meantime I’ll enter the full TweetDeck URL into my browser to access my dear, dear columns.
